Jobos Bay is located on the southeastern coast of Puerto Rico between Salinas and Guayama. It is the second largest embayment on the island, with a surface area of almost 31 km2.  The Bay is bound on the north and east by mangroves of the Aguirre State Forest, to the west by the Mar Negro wetland, and to the south by a series of reefs and cays. Intensive environmental research was conducted in the Bay during the 1970s due to plans to place nuclear and additional fossil fuel power plants there. In 1981, the area was designated a National Estuarine Sanctuary (Anonymous, 1983), and in 1986, this designation was changed to a National Estuarine Research Reserve (Anonymous, 2000; E. Alicea, pers. comm.). These designations have stimulated additional scientific research. As far as we aware, no bibliography of research publications concerning Jobos Bay exists. We hope this Bibliography will be of use for future researchers.  In addition, many of the Jobos Bay CEER or Puerto Rico Nuclear Center unpublished reports have also been variously, if not usually, miscited by others, thus making their correct listing here of further value.

These 135 citations were gathered from the libraries of former researchers of CEER and from library searches.  Since many of the research reports are unpublished, and the publications are scattered in many locations, more citations may be discovered and added to this list in the future. Please inform the authors of any additions or corrections necessary.

Maintaining a bibliography of the research work at Jobos Bay is important because almost all of the research work conducted there has been recorded in unpublished reports (see below) and despite some efforts to preserve this information (Anonymous, 2000, undated; Laboy Nieves, 2001); much of it is being lost.  The Center for Energy and Environmental Research (CEER) Library [University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (UPRM)], which archived many of these reports, was closed in 2000.

Acknowledgments. —Dr. José M. López, former Head of CEER, kindly reviewed the manuscript. Carmen González (Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve), Drs. Alida Ortiz Sotomayor (University of Puerto Rico at Humacao), Gary Breckon, Jorge R. Garcia Sais, Jack Morelock, and Paul M. Yoshioka, UPRM, Carlos R. Ramos, EPA, New York, NY, and Cindy Gines-Sánchez, Mayagüez, helped in locating reports. Eileen Alicea, NOAA/NOS International Program Office, Silver Spring, MD, provided information about the NES and NERR designation.
